Jungle Bay’s focus is on maximum community participation and contribution to biodiversity conservation with minimal environmental disturbance. While providing guest with phenomenal tourism experiences we insist on providing meaningful employment, developing local capacity and supporting social programs that improve the standard of living of our host communities and ensure environmental protection. This is the comprehensive vision of Sam and Glenda Raphael, a Dominican couple who returned to their homeland after studying in the USA, with a strong desire to develop an enterprise that would give back to the local community and boost the rural economy. Sam has successfully combined this innovative project construction and community concept with inspiration from his wife in areas of wellness and Amerindian culture.
The following efforts are the foundation of this award-winning sustainable tourism operation with a high level of travel philanthropy giving back to the host community.
- The resort’s design is very creative in utilizing local materials and preserving the local landscape. The 35 cottages at Jungle Bay are elevated on wooden posts beneath the canopy of Gomier and Cedar trees minimizing disturbance on the soils. Layout takes advantage of natural ventilation, eliminating need for air conditioning. Furniture is handmade on-site by local craftspeople with reclaimed wood.
- Jungle Bay reduces its carbon footprint by approximately 30-40% compared with traditional resorts.
- Jungle Bay sits on 55 acres of forest and borders a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so is active in biodiversity conservation of this fragile forest. One of many examples of stewardship is being a major contributor to a book of “Plants of Dominica’s Southeast” published in partnership with the South East Tourism Development Committee (SETDC), UNESCO and local botanists.
- Works with community members to facilitate trails to be stewards of the environment and run beach cleanups to reduce the chance of sea turtles being strangled by trash while educating communities about sea turtle conservation.
- Guests receive a re-usable water bottle decreasing our use of disposable bottles.
- The resort strives to manage waste, energy use, and other techniques ensuring limited disturbance of the ecosystem - reducing environmental and social impacts in all areas of the operation - through continuous monitoring and evaluation.
- Jungle Bay is one of the few properties certified at the highest level for sustainable tourism & quality standards with Dominica’s Nature Island Standards of Excellence (NISE)
- Purchase of food is from nearby organic farmers and small scale fisheries supporting local, increasing freshness and quality of food versus importing.

Experiential travel is the foundation of any stay at Jungle Bay. The resort offers the several ways for guests to learn by participating. The Jungle Bay Story is told weekly on by developer Sam Raphael. Learn about the inspiration, history and challenges of developing Jungle Bay. This is an opportunity to get first hand answers and explanations. All staff members are ‘guides’ of the Jungle Bay experience and are trained in responsible travel in the fragile ecosystem. Wait staff interpret all the delicious local Caribbean foods you will discover, activity tour guides will offer exceptional interpretation of the ocean when you snorkel to the cloud forest on the Boling Lake Trail to rainforest herbs on other walks. Watch them bark a cinnamon tree or break open a cocao pod – where chocolate comes from! They will take you on heritage experiences to see a working organic farm, learn how bay oil is made and much more. Drumming and dancing classes give a hands-on cultural experience taught by community members, and cooking classes help you learn some techniques to take a taste of Dominica home with you!
